Ad de Jongh (1956) is tandarts en gz-psycholoog. Hij is als bijzonder hoogleraar angst- en gedragsstoornissen – vanwege Stichting Bijzondere Tandheelkunde (SBT) – verbonden aan het Academisch Centrum Tandheelkunde (ACTA) van de Universiteit van Amsterdam en Vrije Universiteit, waar hij verantwoordelijk is voor het onderzoek op het terrein van de gedragswetenschappen in de tandheelkundige setting en hoofdopleider van de postinitiële masteropleiding tandarts-angstbegeleiding. Daarnaast is hij sinds 2011 honorary professor aan de School of Health Sciences van Salford University in Manchester, sinds 2017 aan het Institute of Health and Society van de University of Worcester, en sinds 2018 aan de School of Psychology van Queen’s University in Belfast.

Ad de Jongh studeerde in 1985 af als tandarts aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, in 1991 rondde hij de studie psychologie af (hoofdrichting klinische Psychologie) (Universiteit van Amsterdam; ‘Cum Laude’), en in 1995 promoveerde hij op het proefschrift ‘Dental Anxiety: A cognitive perspective’ aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Vanaf 1988 tot 2001 werkte hij als ‘angsttandarts’ in een tweetal gezondheidscentra. Ad de Jongh heeft zich gespecialiseerd in de behandeling van traumagerelateerde angststoornissen, waaronder de fobie voor de tandheelkundige behandeling – de meest voorkomende fobie in Nederland – en posttraumatische stress-stoornis, ofwel PTSS.

Ad de Jongh heeft bijdragen geleverd op het terrein van de tandheelkunde en de klinische psychologie. Zo introduceerde hij In 1993 de behandelmethode EMDR in Nederland, hetgeen momenteel een behandeling van eerste keuze voor psychotrauma is, en in Nederland door veel psychologen wordt toegepast. Hij is is mede-oprichter, en directeur van de onderzoeksafdeling, van het Psychotrauma Expertise Centre (PSYTREC), een instelling voor geestelijke gezondheidszorg in Bilthoven die een kort, intensief en effectief behandelingsprogramma gebruikt voor Complex PTSS dat slechts 8 dagen duurt. Met 150 patiënten die per maand worden behandeld, is PSYTREC een van de grootste traumabehandelingscentra ter wereld. Ad de Jongh is erkend trainer voor de EMDR Europe Association, en mede-oprichter en bestuurslid van Vereniging EMDR Nederland (VEN; ongeveer 4500 leden), en de EMDR Europe Association (ongeveer 23.000 leden), is onder andere hoofdredacteur van EMDR Magazine (ongeveer 5000 exemplaren), zit in de redactieraad van EMDR Research and Practice en verzorgt lezingen en cursussen op zijn vakgebied in binnen- en buitenland.

Ad de Jongh is ook een onderzoeker en betrokken bij onderzoek naar de effectiviteit van evidence-based behandelingen voor de gevolgen van traumatische gebeurtenissen in een grote verscheidenheid aan populaties, waaronder kinderen, mensen met een verstandelijke beperking en mensen met complexe psychiatrische aandoeningen, zoals complexe PTSS, en psychose.

Ad de Jongh, Ph.D. is both dentist and clinical psychologist. He was appointed in 2003 as professor of Anxiety and Behavior Disorders at the Academic Centre for Dentistry (ACTA) in

Amsterdam, The Netherlands, a collaboration of the University of Amsterdam and the Vrije Universiteit. He is responsible for research in the field of behavioral sciences and is program director of the postgraduate master program ‘Dentist specialized in treatment of dental fear’. Further, he is honorary professor in psychology at the School of Health Sciences of Salford University in Manchester, at the Institute of Health and Society of the University of Worcester, and at the School of Psychology of Queen’s University in Belfast.

In 1985 Ad de Jongh received his DDS degree as a dentist from the University of Amsterdam, in 1991 he finished his master in psychology (main direction clinical psychology) at the University of Amsterdam (‘Cum Laude ‘) and in 1995 he received his PhD for his thesis entitled ‘Dental Anxiety: A cognitive perspective ‘ (University of Amsterdam). From 1988 to 2001 Ad de Jongh worked as a dentist treating dentally fearful patients at two different health centers. After studying Clinical and Health Psychology at the University of Amsterdam he specialized in the treatment of trauma-related anxiety disorders, including dental phobia – the most prevalent type of phobia in the Netherlands – and posttraumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.

Ad de Jongh has contributed to a number of areas in dentistry, and clinical psychology. For example, he was the second person trained in EMDR in Europe and introduced EMDR therapy in the Netherlands in 1993, which is currently first choice for the treatment of psychotrauma, and is used by approximately 95% of the Dutch psychologists who treat psychological trauma based on evidence-based guidelines. Ad de Jongh is approved trainer for the EMDR Europe association, co-founder and board member of the Dutch EMDR association (approximately 4500 members), the EMDR Europe Association (approximately 23000 members), co-editor-in-Chief of EMDR Magazine (5000 copies), serves on the editorial board of the scientific Journal EMDR Research and Practice, and provides lectures and courses in his field of expertise, both in the Netherlands and abroad.

He is co-founder, and head of the research department, of the Psychotrauma Expertise Center (PSYTREC), a mental health institution in Bilthoven that uses a short, intensive and effective treatment programme for Complex PTSD lasting only 8 days. With 150 patients that are being treated per month PSYTREC is one of the largest trauma treatment centres in the world.

Ad de Jongh is currently involved in research determining the efficacy of evidence-based treatments for the consequences of traumatic events in a wide variety of populations including children, people with intellectual disabilities and people with complex psychiatric conditions, such as complex PTSD, and psychosis. He has written or (co-)edited 6 books, and over 300 scientific publications in peer reviewed journals or books.
